The European directive on End-of-Life Vehicles(2000/53/EC) aims to reduce, or prevent, the amount of waste produced from End of Life Vehicles (ELVs) and to increase the recovery and recycling of ELVs. This Directive passed into European law in October 2000 and was due to be transposed into national law in all Member States. This has now been implemented in the UK by the End of Life Vehicles Regulations (2003) and it is now an offence to dispose of an ELV other than to an Environment Agency Authorised Treatment Facility.
